Eligible Artists
BMDCA members, non-members and all Juniors (9-17) in the larger Berner community.  Each group (BMDCA Members and Non-Members) will be judged separately, and each will have medium category winners from which a BIS will be selected

Medium Categories
The original 12 medium categories are being used for the 2021 BMDCA Art & Craft Show. In addition two new Categories have been added - Juniors and New Works. We have adopted the categories and definitions published by the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).

The only category that will not be part of the BMDCA Art & Craft Show is Photography since there is an annual Photo Contest at each BMDCA National Specialty.

So that we can best ensure the integrity of the judging process, please do not place photos of your submitted artwork on Facebook or any other social media vehicle until after the Art Show has concluded and BMDCA members have received their 2022 Spring Issue of The Alpenhorn. 


Eligible artists may enter more than one medium category and up to two entries within the same category. Photos of the work (not the artwork itself) are to be submitted for judging, accompanied by a fully completed entry form. Up to three photos may be submitted for each work. Entries identified as New Works and/or by Juniors will be entered in the appropriate medium category AND in the Juniors and New Works competition.


1. Ceramics: All original clay and porcelain work other than jewelry is accepted in this category. No machine-made or mass-produced work is permitted. All works must be signed.


2. Digital Art: This category includes any original work for which the original image or the manipulation of other source
material was executed by the artist using a computer. Work in this category must be properly signed and numbered as a limited edition on archival-quality materials. Traditional photographs taken through a digital medium should not be entered in this category.
 

3. Drawing: Works created using dry media including chalk, charcoal, pastels, pencil, wax crayon, etc., or from the fluid medium of inks and washes applied by pen or brush are to be entered in this category. (BMDCA Note: includes cartoons)
 

4. Fiber: All work crafted from fibers including two-dimensional, basketry, embroidery, weaving, leatherwork, tapestry, and paper-making. No machine tooling, machine-screened patterns, or other forms of mass production are permitted. No factory-produced wearable items, regardless of additional modification or enhancement by the artist, may be exhibited.
 

5. Glass: No forms of mass production are permitted. No alterations of pre-fabricated glass objects (for example, pressed wine bottles).

 

6. Graphics and Printmaking: Printed works for which the artist hand manipulated the plates, stones, or screens and which have been properly signed and numbered as a limited edition may be entered in this category. All photogravure, photocopy, and/or offset reproductions are ineligible. Printmakers are required to disclose both their creative and printmaking processes.
 

7. Jewelry: All jewelry, whether the work is produced from metal, glass, clay, fiber, paper, plastic or other materials, must be entered in this category. No commercial casts, molds, or production-studio work is allowed. No strung pearls or beads.
 

8. Metalworks: Includes all non-sculptural, non-jewelry works crafted from metals. No production-studio work is allowed.
 

9. Mixed Media: This category includes works, both two- and three-dimensional, that incorporate more than one type of physical material to produce. Includes non-sculptural work as determined by the artist. Examples of this work are an etching that is then painted or a collage combining handmade paper and photography.
 

10. Painting: Works created in oils, acrylics, watercolor, etc., are in this category. Reproductions of all kinds are prohibited.
 

11. Sculpture: Three-dimensional original work done in any medium.
 

12. Wood: Original works in wood that are hand-tooled, machine-worked, turned, or carved are accepted in the wood category.

13. Juniors: Original works from Juniors ages 9-17.

14. New Work: A New Work has never been shown/exhibited prior to the 2021 BMDCA Art & Craft Show and/or is a Work specifically created for competition in this show.

 

Type of Art Show – Paneled
Our five-person panel will first judge the entries in each medium category and determine the category winner for each. The judging panel will then select the Best in BMDCA Art & Craft Show recipient from the category winners. Entries from BMDCA members and non-members will be judged separately. Additionally, all entries identified as New Works and those from Juniors will be judged as two additional categories and one winner selected for each. A non-voting panel and art show chair will facilitate the process.

Judging Criteria & Weights
Artwork will be judged using the criteria below. All criteria are equally weighted.

  •  Theme (Berners - Past, Present, and On the Move)

  •  Creativity and Originality

  •  Skill and Technique

  •  Overall Impression


Entry Fees
To help cover costs, there will be a modest fee for entering the BMDCA Art & Craft Show.
For the first work entered, the fee is $20 for members, $25 for non-members, $15 for Juniors.
For additional works entered, the fee is $10/entry for members, $15 for non-members, $10 for Juniors.

 

Recognition
Photos and descriptions of the BIS, winning category entries, including Best New Work and Best Junior, will be printed in the 2022 Spring Issue of The Alpenhorn. 

 

The Best in BMDCA Art & Craft Show winners (Member and Non-Member) will be invited to submit a short (one-page) article, which will include a photo of the BIS artwork. Through these articles, each BIS artist can share information about his/her artistic story and work. In addition, the winners will receive a BIS rosette, which will be presented in person at the 2022 National Specialty if the member and non-member artists will be in attendance.
